about

"I don't know the exact date this was recorded but it happened in the living room of a guy named Marc Chevalier. He was in the audience at a show I played once. We met later and he mentioned that he liked my music and that he worked on music (doing mastering mainly). He said he could help me record something if I wanted to. So I just went over to his house. I think it was a Sunday night. And I don't know the exact date but I'm pretty sure it was in early 2005.

After we recorded the 12 songs he burned me a c.d. and I think it might have been one of the first c.d.s I'd ever had of my own songs so I started burning copies to give out. I also made a cover. I drew it and made copies at Kinko's and stapled them all together. I think the cover got more attention than the songs to tell you the truth.

There are stories behind some of these songs but it's probably okay if I don't tell them all right here.

This record felt like my first real album after I came to Nashville to try to be a singer/songwriter. I made several tapes before this but I often think of this c.d. as my first serious recording. I know for sure it was the first thing a lot of people ever heard of my music so it's kind of special in that way.

The production is obviously bare. One of my favorite records during this time was The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, which is mostly just Bob singing and playing guitar and harmonica. Some of the songs have more instrumentation but most of them don't. When I first listened to the record I was blown away with how quiet and simple it was. I felt the songs were so good that they didn't need much more, that the sparseness was actually a strength. And that became my goal as a songwriter, to make them so good that they could stand alone with just a guitar and singing. So that's what I did."
